Two Characteristic Numbers for Smooth Plane Curves of Any Degree
We use a sequence of blow-ups over the projective space parametrizing plane curves of degree d to obtain some enumerative results concerning smooth plane curves of arbitrary degree. For d = 4 , this gives a first modem verification of results of H. G. Zeuthen. O. INTRODUCTION The kth 'characteristic number' of the d(dt3) -dimensional family of smooth plane curves of degree d, denoted Nd(k) in t...
متن کاملThe Characteristic Numbers of Quartic Plane Curves
The characteristic numbers of smooth plane quartics are computed using intersection theory on a component of the moduli space of stable maps. This completes the verification of Zeuthen’s prediction of characteristic numbers of smooth plane curves. A short sketch of a computation of the characteristic numbers of plane cubics is also given as an illustration.
متن کاملRecursions for Characteristic Numbers of Genus One Plane Curves
Characteristic numbers of families of maps of nodal curves to P are de ned as intersection of natural divisor classes. (This de nition agrees with the usual de nition for families of plane curves.) Simple recursions for characteristic numbers of genus one plane curves of all degrees are computed.
متن کاملPencils of Plane Curves and Characteristic Varieties
We give a geometric approach to the relation between the irreducible components of the characteristic varieties of local systems on a plane curve arrangement complement and the associated pencils of plane curves discovered recently by M. Falk and S. Yuzvinsky [10] in the case of line arrangements. In this case, this geometric point of view was already hinted to by A. Libgober and S. Yuzvinsky, ...
متن کاملAny smooth toric threefold contains all curves
It is very easy to see that every smooth projective curve can be embedded in P3. Eisenbud and Harris, in conversation, asked whether the same is true if P3 is replaced by an arbitrary smooth rational projective 3-fold X and Eisenbud suggested starting with the case where X is toric. In this note we answer the toric question, affirmatively. For simplicity, we work over the field of complex numbers.
